Alex Salmond Blows it on YouTube

Alex Salmond has just posted this YouTube video in which he says: "On Halloween the ghost of Iraq will return to haunt Tony Blair. The SNP and Plaid Cymru have put down a motion to impeach Blair and hold him to account.

Oh dear, and just when it was going so well. Trust the SNP to clutch defeat from the jaws of victory. It's just this kind of language that will drive potentially rebellious Labour MPs back to the fold.

Well quite . A glance at any Scot nationalist site is enough to make you weep for the Tories up there. I regret being nasty abou their pictish baby eating ways

Well MrMania, new or otherwise, I don't see Annabel Goldie championing the rights of English Students in Scotland or going as far as saying that to discriminate against English students by making them pay higher fees is anti-English, which is what the SNP have said.

And any babies that need eating, I get first refusal.muuuwahaahaha!

Its the kind of opposition to Blair's conduct that the gutless Tories have failed to respond to. Whatever you may think of Salmond, its a pity that he has to make the running with Cameron and co hanging on his coatails. Good luck to SNP and PC. Get off your fence sitting Cameron/Fox fellow travellers. You are beginning to look pathetic - take a stance for a change.

As anyone who reads my swearblog knows I despise this chubby chump more than anyone else in politics. What a smug, sanctimonious oaf - his casuistry and sophistry know no ends. A plague on his house.

Iain - Your analysis doesn't seem to be holding up - Alan Simpson has just declared on News 24 that he will vote against the Government.

From the title I was expecting something completely different.

The joke at the end is worthy of the strongest possible criticism. Those funny old Scots eh?

As for the debate...good I hope it does win this vote for Blair. Why the Tories are criticising the only thing he has got right is quite beyond. British troops are dying, and Dave has nothing better to do than to support these traitors to the union in a quest to dishonour them.

For once, good luck Blair. And shame on any Tories who vote for this appalling motion.

The point is that Salmond is correct. He shouldn't have to pussy-foot around the facts save that he may injure the sensibilities of a few potential Labour rebels who ought to know what to do anyway. If these potential rebels believe in opposing the war in Iraq, then they should act on that, regardless of what the SNP or others say- it's their duty and Alex Salmond shouldn't need to self-censure as it ought to be cut-and-dry no matter what he says on YouTube.

You are clearly not familiar with what impeachment involves, 34 Labour MPs are currently signed up to what amounts to an impeach Blair Early Day Motion.

Incidentaly, my MP who is a junior minister, tells me that EDMs are nothing but "political graffiti" - I wonder how many more voters up and down the country are being told by their Labour MPs that democracy has been suspended until we can get Mr Blair removed?

Seems like the boy Dave is being squeezed between those Tories who think he is a gutless snipe for not supporting Salmond... and those Tories who think he is a gutless snipe for attacking Blair for doing what they thought he should do.

Some you lose... and some you lose.

Whereas you Bob oppose Blair's policy on Iraq and want no repeat but would never side with the Tories becuase of your own small minded prejudices.

So some you lose some you lose

It's not necessarily the matter of the Iraq war that should be looked into, but the manner of how it was conducted. Pre-planning or lack thereof, "undue emphasis" on sexy bits of intelligence, stolen theses, exit strategies... these issues stand apart from the question of whether or not Saddam's removal was a Good Thing(TM).

I saw him being interviewed on TV this morning and the interviewer said Blair might get a "halloween horror" today. Alex said "I hadn't thought of it like that" (or words to that effect). So obviously the news presenter gave him the "halloween" idea.

Perhaps victory is not automaticaly the idea. A victory would mean another enquiry which may not report whilr Blair is in power. A defeat tars the Labour party, & perhaps the Tories, with being frit & wanting to cover up the clear fact that Blair lied.

And nore importantly that Parliament connived at being lied to.

Alex Salmond . Brilliant performance in the House. Demolished Beckett. Credit where credit is due from this Con. Withdraw your remarks, Sir.

Salmond's entire political career has been built around one issue - nationalism. Consequently however eloquent he can be in espousing that cause his actual political skills and instincts are those of a second-rate backbencher rather than a party leader.

Today's actions demonstrate that well....

Hardly, Cassilis. Strip away the national question which dominates Scottish politics and you'll find in Salmond a classic European social democrat.

If Salmond had remained in the Labour Party instead of leaving to join the SNP when he was a young student, who seriously doubts that he wouldn't have spent most of his parliamentary career since 1987 on Labour's front bench?

Guerilla tactics, through necessity, might be the forte of the nationalist parliamentary groups at Westminster and no doubt govern to a large extent how they are perceived in England. However, the SNP and PC deserve some credit for giving over one of their few setpiece occasions so this matter could be debated properly by the house. It speaks volumes for the vacillations of the other party leaderships that this hasn't happened before now.
