Tomorrow Blair will thank the electorate for electing him president

Canterbury is believed to go from Tories to the Liberal Democrats. Conservatives haven't been doing well here, bad press.

The count starts at 9am tomorrow, I shall be nice and inform you of the result :)

Annnd! on my blog, i have the current make up of the Canterbury Council. So, you can make a rough guess on how it will go.

I live in a small ex-mining village, a former Labour stronghold. Although the ward is represented by a popular independent councillor, it is normally rock-solid Labour at the national level. I was out at the polling stations in support of the SNP. The estimated turnout at the 3 polling stations I visited was 50%. Labour only fielded campaigners at 1 polling station out of the 3. Despite the convenient polls yesterday (not the YouGov one today though!) and the decision of the Scottish red tops to support Labour, I think Labour are in for a real kicking.

I live in a small borough in West London - a Conservative stronghold. However, there has been no sign of any election activity by the local councillors. And the polling stations were operating today as primary schools. Not sure what's going on, but I will keep you posted.

Colin Moore said...

Haven't a clue sadly - council not counting till tomorrow. I live in Aylesbury which is expected to fall to the Lib Dems but I can't vote as my postal vote never arrived. Is suspect that I am not the only one and am complaining to the Electoral Commission to try to find out more. I can only hold out hope for a legal challenge but I suspect this is highly unlikely.

Dazed and Confused.
London has no elections today, only the rest of the UK, Why London is excluded is odd, its a quirk of our electoral system

Very little going on here, candidate wise, we have an idle toad and conservative reps.

No, lib dem, no Labour...interesting, although strictly speaking the toad is an erstwhile Labour man so presumably he will follow their line come the crunch.

The idle toad is an independant for those of you assuming I'm hurling slander btw ;) )

Expectations have been stupidly overhyped in this election.

Expect low turnout, Conservative gains short of expectations, Labour not doing too badly. V.close result in Scotland - Labour retain most seats.

Very bad expectation management by Tories - it will look compartively good for Labour and bad for them.

9.15: you are bhownagree and I claim my £5.

Anonymous said...

Er, no. I am a Tory party member and there is no £5 for you.

(for the record: "bhownaggree" - he can't even spell it properly - is a tw*t)

I hate to say it - really I do - but I think that's what's going to happen. We don't do *that* well.

Everyones gone a bit over the top in their predictions this year.

Anonymous said...

When I voted late this afternoon I asked about turnout, which they said was low. This is a a quite strong Conservative area (Stone, Staffordshire, Bill Cash's constituency). Could this somehow bode ill for the Tories across the country as a whole?

Hello Everybody,

Mike Rouse here in the Doughty Street studio. Keep posting to this comment thread. I've got my eye on it all night. Also email myself, Iain or Shane on studio@18doughtystreet.com.

We need your news!

Newsflash from sleepy leafy South Gloucestershire: unprecedented turnout, thousands of voters young and old marching robotically to the polling stations like Cybermen, eyes glazed, chanting in unison "Dale! We Want Dale!" Interviewed later, flustered citizens claimed to have received subliminal messages saying "go on go on go on you know you want to VOTE VOTE VOTE FOR ME VOTE do it for me GO ON GO ON". Many stated their disappointment that Mr Iain Dale did not appear on the ballot paper, forcing them to add his name in pencil, but all were confident they had made the right decision. "Aye, that Iain Dale's the man for the retired miner!", said a retired miner, adding that he had always voted Labour before but "summat just came over me".

In rural Aberdeenshire people still voting late on met a couple just walking down at 21:30 and the Polling station was quite busy. Hopefully a good turnout, itching to see change in Scotland

9.50 PM: The only light in my little village street comes from a back room in the village hall, where an elderly couple keep vigil until 10.00 PM. The street is deserted. The last voter came at 8.45 PM, but still they keep their vigil till the statutory hour. Rather touching.

Our forefathers fought long and hard for the secret ballot and the universal franchise and now millions can't be bothered to vote.

But who can blame them, in local elections? All we want is our dustbins emptied once a week and none of our candidates has anything to say on that subject, expect that they are subject to central government directions.

Anonymous said...

IDS has just rolled up on Sky News. Thank God the polls closed 40 minutes ago.

Is this the best Central Office could do? Or has Adam upset them in some way?

There are rumours around that the BNP have made a big breakthrough in Essex

Anonymous said...

If we lose Malvern Hills DC it will be because we were forgetting to mark down postal voters on canvass returns such that people were wasting hours knocking them up this evening!

Anonymous said...

In my area of Oxfordshire (Dave Cameron's constituency) went at about 4.00 p.m no one in the streets surrounding the polling station and only 4 people in there. Only had two candidates for the local council (Lib Dem and Cons) to vote for and only 10 candidates for the 9 seats on the parish council. It seems democracy has died....

Anonymous said...

If you all know so much why aren't you at the counts!?

Anonymous said...

"Aye, that Iain Dale's the man for the retired miner!", said a retired miner, adding that he had always voted Labour before but "summat just came over me".

Iain Dale came over a retired miner?

Anonymous said...

Who the fuck picked that horrible pink set for 18 Doughty Street?

Also, I thought gay men had a sense of style; what the fuck is Iain Dale wearing?!

Just back from a 5 hour stint telling for the Conservatives at one of Harlow's polling stations - where things looked very good there.

Haven't seen hide or hair of nulab or the Lib Dems all day - until around 9.30 pm when one of the Lib Dem candidates came to vote.

Nulab and the Lib Dems couldn't muster a single teller for the polling station I was based in.

Eating at my pc, I am so famished.

I understand that bad news may be on it's way from Epping in Essex Iain.

This little, well heeled, middle class market town in the Metropolitan Green Belt a few miles from here has already shocked the district by electing 6 BNP councillors. Here's the current council elected 2006:

BNP 6
Conservatives 29
Independent Group 3
Labour 1
Lib Dems 13
Loughton Residents Assoc 5
Independent 1

There is a very real possiblity, I understand, that the BNP will win more seats, perhaps snatching nulab's only ward in Epping.

I hope the fears prove groundless, I want to see Blair kicked, but not that way.

More news from Harlow. I understand that there may be a couple of interesting results here.

The ward to watch is nulab controlled Little Parndon - one of half a dozen parishes which, along with the village of Harlow, were swallowed when the new town of Harlow was built in the late 40s- 50s.

Are nulab going to lose control of their stronghold in Little Parndon? I understand it's possible. However, I'm told it's very close, so keep your finger crossed.

There's also an interesting situation in the Lib Dem stronghold of Staple Tye. Will it still be a stronghold by midnight or there abouts?

Respect are fielding a very popular candidate, Maureen Topley, in the Labour controlled ward of Toddbrooks, so that's an interesting ward to watch too.

Lastly a former local Conservative party leader, Chris Ford, who retired from politics a few years ago is standing as an Independent, would you believe, for the Conservative stronghold of Old Harlow. He was a very popular local politician, so it will be interesting to see what effect he has on that result.

Blimey, look at the time, I must shoot off to the count! It might be in by midnight. Will our nulab, government minister MP be there, I wonder, or is the rumour I've heard that he'll be miles away in another town true?

Mr eugenides reports

11:53pm: Stirling is Michael Forsyth's old [Westminster] seat, and the Tories are trying desperately to take it "back". They require a swing of just under 5% to capture it from Labour.

My man inside the Stirling Tory campaign says - and this is hard information, by the way - that the Tories were ahead on the postal vote, with the SNP pushing Labour into third. With half the ballots now counted, the SNP are in pole position - just - with the Tories second and Labour still third. The remaining votes are, they think, from more rural areas of the constituency, which tend to be more Tory. It's going to be tight.

any views on this comment/conclusion from nick robinson's blog?

Some early signs of how the Tories are doing in the north. The party says that they are on course to become the largest party in Bury and to make gains in Crewe and Nantwich. The official results are not yet in. Sounds good - at first.

These areas used to have Tory MPs and these are councils they really need to take control of. So, the verdict will be likely to be good, but not good enough

East Herts district verification tonight suggests it could to be an interesting count tomorrow. BNP potentially gain their first seat in Bishop's Stortford. A coalition of 'independents' look set to gain small number of Tory seats. Oddly (considering they haven't done any campaigning), there were rather a lot of crosses against Labour candidates.

Iain,

Since you like lemon you might like this:

DANNY DEVITO'S PREMIUM LIMONCELLO LIQUEUR

After starring in films like Get Shorty and Twins and producing Pulp Fiction and Erin Brockovich, Danny DeVito is one of Hollywood's most successful men.

The Italian-American actor is now branching out into Italian lemon liqueur following a drunken appearance on US TV show The View late last year.

"I knew it was the last seven limoncellos that was going to get me," he said at the time.

Showing a true businessman's instinct for turning a PR disaster to his advantage, his own brand of his favourite tipple will go on sale in the US later this year, costing $23.99 (£12) for 750ml.
