Civil Partnership = No Blogging

Blogging will be light to non existent over the weekend. I hope you think my reason is a worthy one.

On Sunday, I am getting "civil partnered" to my partner of thirteen years, John Simmons. Even though it's not exactly on the Colleen McLoughlin-Wayne Rooney scale there's quite a bit of preparation to do.

I'll be back on Monday or Tuesday.

PS Where has that damned helicopter got to? Portofino awaits...

Congratulations, Iain and John. I'm delighted to see that you are making a commitment which, actually, you already had to each other anyway.

My very best wishes to you both.

No one can blame Iain and John for helping themselves to the massive tax perks made available to them by a chancellor who otherwise taxed whatever he could get away with. But the rest of us would do well to ask what national interest justifies this.

That has to be one of the most mean spirited comments ever made on this forum.

Nothing personal Iain but I can't share the unalloyed pleasure of your fellow bloggers. I just don't believe in Civil Partnerships as a concept - bad piece of legislation. However, I wish you well and hope you have a very happy life.

Roger (have a problem with posting anything which isn't anonymous)

I don't particularly agree with civil partnerships either but if that's what Iain wants and what will make him happy then good luck to him. Can your criticism not wait until after what is supposed to be his happiest day? FFS, just give the guy a break.

Good luck Iain!

OT What a pathetic hypocritical rag the Sun is, and what a snivelling little turd Kelvin Mackenzie is. They both claim to speak for traditional British values and slag off the state Britain has come to under Labour but they are now taking on one man, Davis, who is ready to fight back against all that has gone wrong in our country.

The Sun and it's stooge Mackenzie are slimy hypocrites who are doing Bottler Brown's dirty work for them.

I hope all Sun readers realise this and boycott the paper until it changes it's stance.

Isn't it fitting that even though your site is (deservedly) growing in popularity and even with the extraordinary stories of this week, the most numerous comments have been to wish you congratulations. I'm happy to add to that number.

Historically marriage has received fiscal support because the state recognises its vital interest in the resultant natality. Homosexual unions lack this, so why should they receive fiscal benefits?

Oh do go away. Even if you ignore the intolerance and consider the argument of the state levying taxes based on the production of children, then this has no bearing on current government policy which redsitributes through family tax credits. In fact, sharing a household is sustainable and tax efficient in any case - one bin to empty, one connection to the utilities network, one heating bill etc...it should definitely be encouraged.

Civil partnership allows a couple to make a public legal commitment to partnership, with dignity and respect. I know one person who has tied the knot in this way and it made her and her partner and their families very happy indeed.

I'm married so have no direct personal interest in this issue, but I remember growing up when "gay" was the ultimate schoolyard insult, and I feel a great deal of sympathy for those who had to put up with it and suppress their identities - goodness knows what torment it may have caused some people. I have two daughters and if either of them chose to have a civil partnership or a marriage, I would be equally proud and delighted.

Just hope the piccies sell well as well as those of fringe royals and footy types seem to.

Enjoy the day, but don't overdo the bubbly: the world needs the Dale viewpoint, despite its partiality, prejudice, pomposities and perplexities. I see you as a good man fallen among Tories.

Congratulations and every happiness Iain and John. I have what many say is the finest location for a holiday home anywhere in UK....a cottage with its own bay on Isle of Skye where you sit in the observation room watching otters and bird life on the shore and dolphins in the Sound of Sleat. If you want it for a few days to "honeymoon" it is yours with my compliments. A mere soupcon after all the pleasure your blogging gives.

Congratulations Iain and John! But on Monday, we need to consider the kind of mass action required to support DD. Already some liberty minded Labour types have pledged support. We need to take to the streets.

What lovely news - I hope you and John had a super day yesterday. But shhh! Don't tell the old farts in the Church of England! Apparently they frown on people enjoying themselves! Something to do with them not living in the 21st Century. Mind you having read the bible I still can't find the bit where these old bigots refer to!
